Emergency Medicine Department at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Designated as Center of Excellence

The Emergency Medicine Department at Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, has been chosen by the Central Government as a Center of Excellence. It is one of five medical colleges in the country selected by NITI Aayog and ICMR for emergency medicine research. As part of this recognition, the college will receive Rs. 2 crore annually. This is the first time a medical college from Kerala has achieved this distinction.The new emergency department has started operating in an old building at the medical college, with upgraded facilities for emergency medicine. For the first time, a scientific triage system has been introduced. The department now offers a chest pain clinic, a stroke hotline, advanced testing equipment, and a patient-friendly environment. Senior doctors are also available to provide expert care.New departments, systems, and fellowship programs have been introduced to improve care at every level of the medical college. Representatives from AIIMS and the World Health Organization visited the emergency department and praised the efforts. A new postgraduate course in emergency medicine has started with approval for three PG seats. A special block with 100 ICU beds and a SPECT scan facility has been set up, and plans are underway to install a PET scan.During this time, the medical college has been ranked in the national medical education rankings for two consecutive years. As part of the development plan, projects worth Rs. 717 crore are being carried out through KIIFB. The first phase of the road and bridge construction has been completed, and the second phase is underway with an allocation of Rs. 194.32 crore. For the first time in the country, a comprehensive stroke center, including a neurocath lab, has been set up in the government sector at Rs. 14.3 crores. Funds have also been allocated to start robotic surgery at the medical college.Liver transplant surgery has been successfully introduced at the Medical College. New facilities such as the Linac, Interventional Pulmonology Unit, and Burns ICU have been set up. For the first time in the country, neuro intervention has been launched at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. A new ladies' hostel worth Rs. 23 crore has been completed. Additionally, 25 new teaching positions have been created at the Medical College.For the first time in the state, staff has been appointed to start the critical care, genetics, geriatric, interventional radiology, and rheumatology departments at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, and work is underway. The Medical College is undergoing exceptional development. During this government's tenure, the Central Government recognized SAT Hospital as a Center of Excellence for Rare Diseases. As a result, both the Medical College and SAT Hospital are becoming Centers of Excellence.
