The Barapole Small Hydropower Project in Kannur has achieved a remarkable milestone in renewable energy production. The only hydropower facility in the district, Barapole exceeded its annual target of 360 lakh units of electricity, reaching this goal with seven months remaining in the production calendar. Since its inauguration on February 29, 2016, the plant has repeatedly surpassed expectations, producing a record 498.3 lakh units in 2021-22 and now aiming for 500 lakh units this year. With a 15 MW installed capacity across three 5 MW generators, Barapole operates on a unique trench weir system, eliminating the need for a dam. This setup, the first of its kind in South India, channels power from 11 kV to 33 kV, which is then transmitted to the 110 kV substation at Kunnoth through underground cables. To date, Barapole has supplied 2,745.4 lakh units of electricity to the state power grid and added a 1 MW canal solar project along with a 3 MW canal roof solar project, highlighting its dedication to advancing sustainable energy in Kerala.
